Brunei To Cease Fuel Subsidy for Energy Day

I heard about this from someone during lunch, they said they read it in the news. I was not so sure, cuz I must have missed the news so I didn’t read about it myself. But on Saturday, 22nd May 2010, I was buying fuel for my car and saw the sign on the side of the fuel pumps. The prices of fuel in Brunei will have no subsidy on monday 24th of May 2010.

So basically, the prices on monday for premium and super is twice the usual amount, and regular and diesel is thrice the price!

I bet the people who knows about this will definitely buy more fuel on sunday to compensate for monday. But I bet there are still others that don’t know, so I guess they will  find out then.

I guess this thing is important in letting the people of brunei realize how much the government of brunei has been subsidizing for the nation’s fuel cost. I hope that they will repeat this next year. Although it would probably have more effect if it was longer than a day. People would be forced to reduce their travels, maybe even consider public transport.

I guess this will also prepare bruneians for a future without subsidize fuel. then it will force us to develop our public transport such as taxis, buses and maybe even build our own Light Railway Transport system. That’s a possible future in 5 to 10 years.

Happy energy day!
